Tory Council fails SEND children again – This time on transport

September 8, 2020 5:06 PM

Cllr LindIn light of COVID-19 all councils in the UK have had to make changes in their home to school transport arrangements. Derby City Council had committed to writing to all effected parents to let them know the travel arrangements for their children this does not seem to have happened, leaving many families in the dark.

Derby City Council have now issued a statement which confirms as of yesterday evening they haven't completed the travel arrangements for some of the children attending St Martins and Ivy House Schools and there has been issues with sending information to St Andrews, all of which are special schools.

Lib Dem Cllr Danielle Lind - Chair of the children and Young People Scrutiny Committee said "This is totally unacceptable, I am shocked and appalled reading parents, carers and professionals comments on social media regarding the councils response to home to school transport. My heart goes out to the families involved, as if dealing with the pandemic and the impact of that on their families and the education of their vulnerable children and young people wasn't difficult enough, many are now faced with the failures of our Conservative led council which is having a detrimental impact on children and young people with SEND, they deserve better! I am calling on the Conservative administration to bring in extra resources to sort this issue out immediately and conduct a review to ensure nothing like this happens again. The council has told me that they are experiencing challenges in arranging the transport in such a short time, but the government issued final guidance on 11th Aug.

The cabinet member for Children and Young People needs to explain why this happened, what were the issues and why she did not arrange additional resources to be put into supporting the transition back to school for some of the most vulnerable children in the city?

Any parents that are concerned about their SEND children's home to school transport arrangements should contact the council in the normal way but if you are still having problems you can contact me by email at and I will do my best to help.
