Education secretary Gavin Williamson MP visited Derby today, where he said that 'every child should be in school' and criticised climate strike protesters.

Liberal Democrat MP Candidate for Derby North Greg Webb said "Many parents across Derby will be rightly upset by Mr. Williamson's comments today.

"Parents of children with Special Educational Needs are being routinely let down across Derby. His government's policies have left many with no school to go to. Children who would dearly love to have a school where they could be educated are being denied one by his government's underfunding and mishandling.

"And does Mr. Williamson really want children to care less about their futures? Climate change is a massively important issue that will define all of our futures. These children know the importance of their futures more than anyone. That they are choosing to sacrifice time in school to protest at his government's inaction on climate change shows just how serious a problem it is.

"Education Secretary Gavin Williamson's comments are simply crass. On one side he ignores the children and families his government is badly letting down today. On another he ignores the justifiable concerns of the next generation nationwide. Derby demands better than a minister coming here for a cheap photo op and dismissing the community's concerns."
