Barry Holliday, pictured with Sir Ed Davey MP, previously Lib Dem Secretary of State for Energy and Climate ChangeFollowing the National Audit Office report on the rolling out smart energy meters, Lib Dems have slammed the Tories for their botched handling of the rollout.

Liberal Democrat candidate for Derby North, Barry Holliday, commented:

"The smart meter programme's aims are positive and making the energy system smarter is essential if we want to move to a low carbon economy and help tackle climate change.

"However, the Tories have bungled this badly. When Lib Dems left Government in 2015 we were expecting 2nd generation meters and a central database within the year; we still have neither. Instead, because of Conservative failings, suppliers are still rolling out 1st generation meters that stop working if you switch supplier. What's the point of a smart meter that stops working if you switch? Liberal Democrats demand better.

"Firstly, the Government needs to accept some hard truths: they have completely messed this up, it's going to come in massively over budget, and they are to blame. Only then can the public trust that smart meters will work for them, otherwise they'll think it's nothing more than an expensive white elephant."
