Liberal Democrat campaigner Barry HollidayIt has come to light that the A52 widening project started by the previous Labour City Council administration is rocketing in cost. From a previous budget of £15 million, the works are now forecast to be an eye-watering possible £30 million. The new Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Campaigner for Derby North, Barry Holliday, has called on Derby Labour members to come clean about what they know.

At a meeting with Council Group Leader Cllr Ruth Skelton, Barry Holliday said:

"Do Derby Labour think transparency is a one-way street? Or do they think that transparency should end because they've lost power in the Council?

"With an investigation now being held into the overspend of the Wyvern and Pride Park roadworks, the members of Derby Labour must come clean about what they knew and when.

"Local media have been shown proof that the overspend was known about in April, and the new Labour Group Leader has admitted they knew in February. Cllr Afzal, as the responsible Cabinet member at the time, appears to be claiming no knowledge of the problem. Is he incompetent or misleading Derby residents?

"It is well known that Cllr Afzal and Labour MP for Derby North Chris Williamson are close friends. How much did our sitting MP know about his colleagues failings?

"If this investigation uncovers that Derby Labour's elected representatives have mishandled the widening project and potentially wasted millions of pounds of public money while colleagues did nothing, they should be held accountable and consider their positions. The people of Derby deserve answers, not Labour's waste."
