Moorways Replacement: Somewhere It’s Easy To Swim?

Derby City Council has cleared the site for the new swimming pool at Moorways. But who will use it?

It will have an adaptable ten lane 50m long main pool for Olympic swimmers to train - and smaller learner and fun pools for families.

The whole is expected to cost £33 million to build and someone (not the Council) should be able to run it with a £400,000 subsidy every year.

The pools in Queens Leisure Centre in the City Centre are likely to close in the next few years. There should therefore be lots of swimmers looking for another pool.

But how will they get to Moorways? Is this the best place to build a pool?

Councillor Lucy Care said, "We know how busy Derby's roads can be. Derby has been criticised for its poor air quality. We need a new pool, but it would be much better in or near the city centre. This site is not joined-up thinking."
