Cllrs Lucy Care and Eric Ashburner with one of the consultation notices about the 20mph zones.

1300 homes in the area from Uttoxeter Road to Burton Road were consulted by letter about the proposal to reduce the speed limit on local roads to 20mph. This was then formally advertised on the affected streets. Only one person wrote in with concerns, centring on enforcement of the new limit. More than a dozen people supported the lower speed limit.

Cllr Lucy Care said "Between 20mph and 30mph the likelihood of injury - and death - increases a lot. Hit at 20mph, only one in 20 pedestrians is likely to be killed, but at 30mph nearly half - nine - are likely to die. Every mph slower helps. Children, being smaller, are generally more likely to die if hit."

Councillors realise that some speed enforcement may be helpful at some places and times. They have therefore spoken with the police. The police are already working with local people to form 'community speedwatch' groups, which could also help.

The consultation has now closed.
