Joining up the NHS and social care

Lucy Care at the Royal Derby HospitalAt present hospital beds can be blocked because local councils, which are responsible for social care, have not found somewhere for patients to be cared-for out of hospital. It shouldn't be like this.

Liberal Democrats want health and social care budgets for each area to be joined up by 2020. This will also place a bigger incentive on areas to keep people healthier for longer. At present many people spend their last 20 years of life with poor health.

There are lots of things that people can do to stay healthy - or regain health - but at present there is little incentive to promote these. And any Council, which currently does much of the promotion, gets little of the benefit.

Liberal Democrats also want to continue to raise understanding of mental health, treating it with the same urgency as physical health needs.

Change costs money, and the Liberal Democrats are committed to to raise the money for the NHS and social care to meet current demands, and develop these changes by putting 1p on income tax .
