Labour’s Library Closure Bombshell

September 12, 2016 10:24 AM

Cllr Joe Naitta, Cllr Ruth Skelton and Danielle Lind visiting Blagreaves LibraryAt the August Council Cabinet meeting Labour voted through their plans to take most of Derby's libraries out of the Council's "statutory offer". Only the Local Studies & Family History Library, the Central/Riverside Library, Alvaston and Peartree libraries will be part of the "statutory offer". The other libraries, including Blagreaves, will close unless local people are willing to run them on a voluntary basis. A 12 week consultation will be held during autumn 2016 on the 4 options for the future.

The full report is available on the Council's website (Council Cabinet papers for 3rd August item 9). There should also be a copy at Blagreaves Library.

Councillor Ruth Skelton said, "We suspected that Labour was planning to close most libraries in Derby, although they "campaigned" in the elections to save them. The truth has now come out."
