Chairman of Derby Liberal Democrats Lucy Care has welcomed the announcement by the government that the Midland Mainline that connects Derby with Sheffield and London is to be improved.

The government is due to announce today that the railway line is to be electrified.

Lucy Care said "I very much welcome this news. Electrification of the Midland Mainline was something I was regularly lobbying for when I was a member of the East Midlands Regional Assembly and when I was Cabinet Member for Transport in Derby.

"Back in 2009 I ran a petition, which called on the then Labour government to electrify the East Midlands Mainline. I'm delighted that Liberal Democrats in coalition are now going to deliver on this project."
